Title : MUST SEE-BIG BAMBU AT THE MET
MUST SEE-BIG BAMBU AT THE MET
New York in the summer- so much to see and do! This past Friday evening, I met friends for cocktails on the rooftop garden at the Metropolitan Museum and was completely capitvated by the latest installation "Big Bambu: You Can't, You Won't, and You Don't Stop."
You won't want to miss this brilliant collaboration of architecture and sculpture, a creation of Doug and Mike Starn, 48-year-old fraternal twins who have been collaborating since they were teenagers. Entering the rooftop garden, visitors are met with what looks like a giant game of pickup sticks, rising dramatically against the backdrop of the Manhattan skyline. Using 5,000 bamboo poles and 50 miles of climbing rope, Big Bambu is a progressive sculpture that makes up a giant wave that crests some 50 feet above the Met's rooftop. It won't ever reach a "completed" state but instead will be continually built and modified by the artists and a team of rock climbers, who were recruited to fasten the poles together by perching, climbing and hanging in the structure for 10 hours a day.Make your way to the rooftop garden after an afternoon in the museum for a refreshing cocktail and stunning visual display or...
reserve a spot and climb Big Bambu with an experienced guide, who will lead you and about 14 other "thrill seekers" on guided tours along the elevated, roller-coastery pathways that travel into and above the sculpture.
I plan to come back without stilettos for the guided tour!
Big Bambu runs through October 31st and is a must for visitors and locals alike!
