Favourite Places...Making time to reconnect.

I thought I might start a regular post of my Favourite Places - which might be a particular space, room, location, country from anywhere around the world. So today I'm starting with something close to home, and following up on the Hamptons theme of yesterday.

For my husband's birthday a few weeks back we stayed at a gorgeous boutique hotel on the NSW Central Coast, called Bells at Killcare. It is one of the nicest regional hotels I have stayed at in Australia. Great beachy weatherboard cottages, very Cape Cod style both inside and out, stunning landscaped grounds and a sensational restaurant run by Stefano Manfredi.

We were lucky enough to have a night away, mid-week, without kids which was a particular treat. My husband took the afternoon off and we drove up to the hotel with the sun shining, and me decked out in thongs and flimsy sundress, counting the minutes until I could be lounging like a lizard by the pool with a glass of sauv blanc and devouring the half dozen magazines I had brought with me. (BC, before children, I would buy a magazine and read it within the hour. Now I find they can sit on my bedside table gathering dust for weeks before I get the chance to open the cover).

By the time we arrived the heavens had opened, the temperature dropped about 15 degrees and my outfit suddenly looked very out of place. But the cool change did force us to bunker down. So I ordered a bottle of champers, ran the spa bath and we sat in those foamy bubbles and did something we hadn't done for months - (no, not that!) we talked solidly for an hour! Imagine that! What a luxury it was. Just to spend time, uninterrupted to talk about our lives, make decisions, hear each other's thoughts and opinions and just reconnect. It made me realise how when you lead busy lives and have young kids you so often put your relationship on the bottom of the ladder of priorities and somehow lose the ability to just communicate and connect. I know for me that at the end of the day I have expended so much physical and emotional energy on the kids, that there's often not much left for my poor husband, who gets dinner on a tray in front of the TV and is lucky if I make the effort to pass the remote. Putting away the iPhone, the iMac, the iPad, the TV and all the other distractions, ie blogs, means you make time to actually talk to another human being, and that is a skill I fear we are losing in this era of electronic chatter. The moral of the story is that I am going to make a concerted effort to talk to my husband more than once a year on his birthday!

Anyway, here are some pics of Bells. As you will see, blue, beige and white decor and furnishings feature very heavily and as they are my all time favourite combination, this place was a particular treat.

How do you find time to balance everything in life and not drop too many balls?
