Just a spoonful of sugar....Bowral sets world record!
How's this for a bit of community spirit. In my other home town of Bowral on the weekend, 2115 enthusiastic locals and Mary Poppins devotees got together and broke the Guinness World Record for the largest umbrella mosaic ever created. The previous record was set in Serbia, in 2009. As the spiritual birthplace of Mary Poppins and the hometown of author P.L.Travers, the local drama group managed to get enough people gathered with their umbrellas on Bradman Oval for the attempt. It was the iconic image of Mary Poppins herself that was the subject of the world record, complete with carpet bag and umbrella. Doesn't it look amazing! My sister and her two boys contributed their umbrellas to the corner of her bag! A huge celebration followed with a screening of the original movie starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke in the evening (one of my all-time favourites - I'm a musical tragic), and with a spectacular fireworks finale. The Southern Highlands should be very proud - I certainly am!
