What's in a name? Why Georgica Pond....

As this blog is only very new and I have my learner's plates on, I am still trying to get a grasp of the whole blogging thing - how it works, what to post, what to say, how to say it etc. And that's before I even try to master the whole technical side of it.  I'm finding that it is a real case of trial and error - I write and edit and re-edit and delete and start again. But learning how to find my "authentic voice", as a great friend put it, is proving the real challenge. I guess when people know you well, they know when you are being yourself or not. So, I am on a mission to be myself, and relax into the whole thing. Another curse of the perfectionist...wanting everything to be, well, perfect.

Anyway, you may have been curious about the name of this blog. So I thought I might give an explanation as to why I chose it. Some people love it, others don't and some, like my husband, just think it's plain weird. I did consider just using my name, or something else clever and more descriptive, something that perhaps hinted at what you could expect from my blog, but once I got this name in my head, I just couldn't get it out.

I suppose it all started when my obsession with all things American began, some ten years ago or so. My first professional crush, so to speak, was on Martha Stewart, and I think to this day, her life, magazines, media empire and unique style impact just about everything I do. I got into weddings because of her, I got into styling because of her and her philosophy, style and success continues to amaze and inspire me. Anyway, that's also how I got introduced to the East Coast of the US and my next love affair, with the Hamptons, began.

On a solo trip to the US in September 2002 (prior to husband and babies, of course), I travelled to New York where I spent about five days staying at the ultra hip Hudson Hotel on W58th St. Groovy to say the least, but the smallest hotel toilet I've ever seen - you had to sit sideways on it because the bathroom was so tiny and the wall was only about 30 cm from the edge of the loo. Sorry, I digress. So I caught the train to Long Island and hired a car, then spent three glorious days driving around the Hamptons - I thought I'd died and gone to heaven! I knew this would be the beginning of a lifetime love affair and nearly ten years on it just gets stronger with each passing year. The houses, architecture, shops, restaurants, villages, gardens, markets, beaches, people, lifestyle, weather - I could go on....

One of the beautiful neighbourhoods I stumbled upon during my days cruising around was Georgica Pond, a 290-acre coastal lagoon on the west border of East Hampton Village and Wainscott. It was simply breathtaking. Surrounded by the most spectacular holiday houses (well, gigantic mansions more like) that I had ever seen, and the most glorious gardens, lawns and pristine winding lanes. It was like stepping into a storybook, or a movie set (ie Something's Gotta Give). The shingled houses, the weatherboards, the white painted fences, manicured lawns, American flags, sweeping driveways, the expansive verandahs, and the hints of home decorating that I could catch on the zoom of my camera from the front gate just captivated me. I knew I had found my spiritual (read - if I had a rich husband who was prepared to move there) home!

I soon discovered that the pond was home to the likes of Steven Spielberg, Calvin Klein, the Clintons, Ronald Perelmann and my very own Martha, all of whom had palatial holiday homes in this picturesque village. Of course, there are many other beautiful ponds in the Hamptons ie Mill Pond, Lily Pond, Sagaponak Pond and Wainscott Pond to name a few, but Georgica Pond was such a pretty and unique name, that I couldn't pass it up.

So there it is. As I said, my husband thinks it's dumb and doesn't get it, or the significance, but that's just a guy thing. He is sure people are going to start calling me Georgica! Oh, well, I love it and it's staying!
