Weekend Roundup
I'm on my own at the moment as hubs is working hard for a couple of weeks in Barcelona (I know, poor bugger!). I normally actually quite relish time on my own, when I'm free to blog, shop, read mags, order takeaway, shop, watch rom coms, sleep without being disturbed, shop, leave house messy, do no laundry and did I mention shop?
It's always great not to have to sneak my purchases into the house, quickly rip off the swing tags, dispose of said shopping bags in outside wheelie bins (preferably those belonging to neighbours) and chuck them hastily in the laundry basket (so they look used) or stuff them at the back of the closet before my husband can ask "Is that new?" - to which I usually answer either "What this? No, I've had this for ages!" or "What this? You've seen this before!".
Sadly the day he left I managed to wholeheartedly embrace the gastro bug my kids have been felled by this week, so I'm not enjoying any of the above pursuits - hard to do when you're stuck on the loo all day and night!
I started to wonder how on earth I managed to acquire so much crappy plastic kids' stuff? Why is it that every single mother I know has a plastics drawer that looks something like this. Why does nothing match? Why are the lids breeding? Does it not occur to us mothers to buy everything in the same design, colour and style, so that not only will they all look nice together, but they will all fit properly in the drawer?
The same goes for cutlery. Nothing uniform in colours, style or design! Hopeless mess!
We got into some baking which I admit I am pretty hopeless at, and do somewhat reluctantly. I always find baking with my kids makes me mildly annoyed, and by the end of the ordeal I'm usually quite agitated and getting cross at innocent little people for making a mess, not doing it properly and taking too long. This is the control freak in me getting way out of control. It's also why I let the kids decorate their own Christmas tree!
