Bathroom Vanity - Decisions made

Firstly, huge thanks to everybody for coming to the party with great advice, support, suggestions and reassurance! I have read all your ideas carefully and taken it all on board. As a result, I have made some decisions, spent more money than originally hoped, but I think I have a better result and feel more comfortable with the products at the end of the day.

So, here's where I'm at with vanities:

I saw this gorgeous photo on the Thibaut website and have been drooling over it ever since.

Thibaut
I found a similar product by Studio Bagno which retails for about $4,000 and was dumbstruck with disappointment and shock when I heard.

Studio Bagno
I had almost given up when I stumbled across an almost exact replica while looking at something else at Early Settler store (many of you had recommended it), and thought all my problems have been solved when I saw the price tag "on sale - $199". Eureka!! Of course, it's about the last one in the country and I had to take floor stock as it's now discontinued.

Recollections
For the kids' bathroom I decided on something from Early Settler, which was on sale in a package and for $995 comes with basin, taps and Carrara marble benchtop. How could you do better than that? I'll swap the handles but it's pretty damn good.

Then for our bathroom vanity, despite some of you saying it would be possible, and I agree that converting furniture into vanities is indeed possible, using Ikea furniture was not a great idea. Comments about warping, bowing, rotting, mould, and general collapse made it much less appealing despite the bargain, so I  have decided to bite the bullet and found a fabulous vanity at Schots in Melbourne. Bit of nightmare having to get it to Sydney and there is no guarantee about what the marble top will be like, ie light or dark veining, and it's way more than I wanted to spend (well, than my husband wanted me to spend), but I think in the end it's worth the money because it's still way cheaper than a custom built one and the price $2699 includes the marble top and basins. So I'm still ahead. The only challenge will be getting it in the ensuite and the builder is going to have to plane about 20mm off the wall studs to make it fit!

But I can't tell you the relief having a made some decisions and placed orders. Pressure is coming off. The builder has been a huge help in the past few days, probably after I turned up on site on Monday looking very down in the mouth and on the verge of tears. So he is doing his best to make things happen now, which is marvellous!

So thanks again to all you lovely ladies for all your tips and ideas, referrals and suggestions. I even had one lovely reader, Liz, knock on my door this afternoon and drop off a magazine article she had seen about converting vanities. What a sweet thought. And no Liz, I don't think you're a stalker!

Now, next challenge is getting the cost of the kitchen down. We are currently at about $35,000 for plain white poly kitchen with shaker style cabinets, and that's without benchtops, appliances etc. Can anyone recommend a great priced kitchen company or cabinetmaker in Sydney area?
