Title : Out of the Darkness
Out of the Darkness
Thankfully, I had to collect some things I had ordered from Recollections, the most perplexing shop imaginable, which stalled my internet purchases. Recollections is one of those shops I would never have gone into, had it not been for someone's recommendation because at first glance it appears to have the most ghastly stuff, or just really bad Federation style, but if you hunt around and are clever about what you look for and how you use it, you can unearth the most amazing things at ridiculous prices. Talk about bang for your buck!
So for the house this week I decided on the tiles. Plain Carrara marble 300x300 for the kids bathroom and powder room, a sturdry grey porcelain for the laundry and white subway for all the wet areas. Also picked a lovely blue mosaic for the pool waterline, but it turned up the wrong shade and now they can't get the one I chose. So I'm back to square one on that.
But I did find this beautiful range of tiles, which are pretty expensive, about $330/sqm but what caught my attention was the gorgeous range of soft colours, in particular this duck egg blue. I'm trying to think of where I can use it in the house, and may do the splashback in the kitchen. It's called Matrix, and you can pick any colour in all these tile sizes.
This is the bargain mirror I got at Recollections. For only $79, (my lovely friend Wendy who has the most amazing taste, is an America addict like me, and is renovating a country house) and I both got one. Wendy spotted a similar mirror used in US Home Beautiful mag, and came up with the idea. So I'm going to paint mine a fun colour like coral for Poppy's room.
Thought this was pretty good value for $1299. Only comes in this colour, but not bad.
In an effort to trim the budget, I ordered all our bathroom accessories from here too. They are dead plain and very reasonable.
While at the check out on of the girls started unpacking boxes and out popped these little beauties. They are too small for our kitchen island, but I bought two for the laundry. Only $89 each.
Then spotted this great outdoor wicker range. Lovely soft grey woven plastic, looks and feels like wicker and is really comfy. Bargain for $259!
Then I headed off to Magins, a lovely lighting shop in Crows Nest. I thought all my prayers had been answered when I saw their range of lights, especially nickel and bronze lanterns, until I saw the prices! I need a really big light for our stairwell and they have some stunning chandeliers and lanterns in polished nickerl there which are just like those I've seen at Circa Lighting and Shades of Light, but are about $3500!
It was even more depressing, finding stuff in Australia that would be perfect and just like those I have seen in the US, but finding out that it would be cheaper for me to buy the lights in the US and have them shipped out. Exterior lights for example are $700+ and I need 7 of them. Not an option. Even the wall scones were about $275, again cheaper to buy online in US and pay for shipping!
So I headed off to Lights Up Willoughby, in one last desperate effort to find some lights before returning home to press the proceed button on my orders. I was quite stoked to find a few great things and really, well, cheap!
Exterior lights are impossible to find here, if you want classic, traditional and not have to remortgage your house. I just want the US ones, but I thought this was nice and almost the same as the Restoration Hardware one I found. Only $175.
Not bad either.
Thought this could be a great lantern option for our entry foyer.
Ok, so it's not Waterworks, but it could do for about $100! And I don't have to worry about rewiring. I think I'll still get the Waterworks ones for our ensuite and maybe our bedroom, but something like this would be fine elsewhere.
Three of these could be fun above the island.
Now, here's another selection of little gems I stumbled across at Recollections. How fab.
This has a marble top.
The table not the vase....
Got one of these for our bathroom, to store towels etc.
Bought 5 of these in various sizes. Just a simple nickel pot planter, or perhaps ice bucket, or something - only about $20 each.
Anybody have any other tips or recommendations for lighting shops in Sydney?
So off to collect my 20sqm of marble tiles from out west, and try to solve the pool tile dilemma. The pool coping is being laid today and things are coming along at the house. Updates tomorrow!
