On the hunt - success!

So in my endless quest to find lighting solutions for my house (I hear you grown and no doubt you are as sick of this saga as I am!)....I think I have been to every single lighting shop in the Sydney metro area and have visited just about every online lighting shop imaginable.

I finally gave in, and ordered about $1500 worth of heavenly lights from US website Shades of Light, after I signed up to US ShopnShip. I have been waiting anxiously to see what the freight costs are going to be once they arrive at my allocated address in Florida, which happened this morning. So watch this space!

However, although my search for exterior lights still hasn't turned up anything affordable. I realised my parents have some lovely exterior lights I only discovered on the weekend, which I never noticed, but they are Ismos an Italian brand and quite expensive. Funny how you don't notice things until they are in your immediate consciousness. They are over ten years old, but look great. And they have this amazing iron chandelier above the dining table which I have been coveting for years.

I had to venture back to good ol' Recollections today to collect my bathroom accessories, just the simplest of polished chrome towel rails and loo roll holders, but so reasonable that you can't argue. While there I looked around to see what new stock was in, and lo and behold, some amazing finds. They really have some great things in for the new October catalogue and I have saved myself a fortune and the trouble of going back to the US sites. Here's my latest treasures (they should be paying me an endorsement fee!).

Who would know these didn't come from Restoration Hardware or Pottery Barn? And really reasonably priced. You just have to know what to look for!

Saw this quite sweet hall table at a shop in Crows Nest, on sale. Could be good stripped back and re-stained a bit darker.

Then went on to Coco Republic to see what kind of inspiration I could glean there. They have a sale on and there are some not quite bargains to be hard. They are going quite Restoration Hardware Belgium industrial aviation style lately - if you're interested.

Love these black display cabinets. Must have in pair.

Apparently they are imported...........from Indonesia

Nice pendant light
Gorgeous dining chair with nailhead

Great light fitting
Stunning mirror - must have this.  Perfect for entry foyer and reasonable at $895
Here's a few of the new pieces from Recollections. You just need a bit of imagination and you can turn this stuff into something fabulous. This bookcase, no different from something you'd find at Town and Country Style, but with a lick of paint. It's only $999.

I am on the eternal hunt for nice scones in Australia and I think I have found it! Just unpacked, this comes in aged bronze and polished nickel and with a matching pleated shade for only $15 it's a bargain. I wish I hadn't spent the money on Pottery Barn because I think these are as good!

For my last stop, I went to Orient House in Glebe who are having a 30% off sale until the weekend. If you are in the market for some fabulous oriental or Asian inspired furniture or some amazing blue and white china, then this is definitely worth a visit.

Would love these doors for our pool cabana

So tempted by these Chiang Mai Dragon cushions - 30% off, almost too good to refuse!

Last stop was Ruby Star Traders. Have usually seen these guys at  the gift fair so this was my first visit to their retail showroom. Lots of gorgeous things to behold. But my favourite is this mother of pearl inlaid chest, in blue.

There were major disappointments and frustrations at the house today. The stairs turned up completed, and mid-installation I turned up to discover they had been made with a bullnose edge rather than the pencil edge I had requested. After lots of emails, heated exchanges and confrontation I eventually had to back down and accept that without proof there was not much I could do to force the issue. So it seems that despite spending about $5k having the bullnose skirtings and architraves removed from every room of the house, I now have to accept them on the stairs because the stair-maker didn't read his emails properly and I have no proof he received them.

Lesson learnt - the electronic age is no advantage when it comes to evidence and proof. Nothing like a signed copy of a contract or agreement handed to somebody in person!

Our lovely tiler was due to turn up today to start the waterline tiling. Prior to that the pool company had to come and empty the pool of murky water, and remove the timber framework that was still up around the steps.

When I arrived at about 9am, there was a young boy sitting by the pool's edge with his head in his lap, hoodie on, while the pool drained into the garden! Last time this happened, our neighbours' back yards were flooded and we were put in a very tricky position by the pool company for their incompetence and negligence.

So, here they are - doing it again! I looked over the fence to see that, yes, in fact, the water was flooding into our neighbours' backyard and the hapless teenager none the wiser!

Then he admitted that he had accidentally broken one of the coping tiles. He says he just stepped in it, and it just snapped off. HELLO! What kind of 30mm solid travertine coping tile just snaps in two when a skinny teenager steps on it? And what of the sledge hammer that just happened to be nearby when he made this innocent claim?

So apparently the pool company is claiming that we are responsible for the damage because the travertine could have had a weakness and apprentlly this guy doesn't lie, but according to the pool tiler and the tile/quarry manufacturer this is a hard-wearing, tumbled travertine and it is highly unlikely that anything other than a hammer or heavy object could have broken it.

So here's what my lovely coping looks like now. Watch this space!

So we get to this point in the renovation when I just want MY LIFE BACK! I can't wait for this to be over and have everything finished and just get on with normal living. Did I ever say that I wanted to renovate for a living? I must have been having a bad day!
