Look At vs Live With

There are so many different styles of design and decorating I love, and I often get myself confused and develop a kind of style identity-crisis with the daily assault of beautiful and stimulating interiors images that we see online. I think I  have zeroed in on my latest preferred style or taste and am ready to commit to a scheme for somewhere in the house, and then I see something else that takes my fancy and I'm suddenly off on another tangent.

One day I'm all Phoebe Howard, soft muted tones and classic timeless design, the next I'm going down more of a Tobi Fairley/Lilly Pulitzer path of Florida brights and chinoiserie accents. Yesterday I wanted the glamour of Mary McDonald and prior to that I was all India Hicks British Colonial! HELP!

But then I see a house like this one, and I realise that what I love to look at and what I can live with are two different things. So while I can appreciate, admire and swoon over the huge variety of interiors from the eclectic to the glamorous, the classic to the kitsch, at the end of the day what I am comfortable with in my home is summed up in this house I found this morning via Traditional Home.

It's a shingle style Dutch Colonial in Seattle, a new build, and inspired by that old chestnut we all know so well, Something's Gotta Give. This is a slightly more tailored look than the movie house and a lot less colour, but in keeping with that East Coast aesthetic of lots of white wood, dark floors, natural fabrics, soft beiges and eggshell, marble tiles, and touches of palest seafoam.

Interior design is by Susan Marinello. It's a light, airy, relaxed, comfortable but elegant home full of soft hues and textures, and sophisticated architectural details, and the only thing I'd add would be a bit more pattern and colour in rugs, artwork and soft furnishings. But it's a good jumping off point.

The dining room  features Dessin Fournir dining table and  Dennis & Leen chandelier. I always like a rug under dining tables, so that's one thing I'd probably add here.

Love those transom windows above the front door and the flared staircase. And how about that chandelier from Circa Lighting! I'd need to add some colour here by way of a rug or fabulous painting if it were my house. Reminds me of the foyer in the Revenge house.

The wall colour is Benjamin Moore Morning Dew - subtle but enough. And I'm a sucker for coffered ceilings. The Suzanne Kasler quatrefoil lamps and sconces are again Circa Lighting.

The shaker style kitchen features butt hinges and oil-rubbed bronze latches with black granite benchtops and glazed tiles from Ann Sacks.

I maybe would have painted the ceiling out here a soft aqua and added some really large potted plants, and a bit of colour by way of cushions or a rug. Teak furniture is from Restoration Hardware, although I'm not a fan of the colour, so would go for something darker or metal.

A bit plain for my taste, I'd like to see some more colour and prettiness.

A very restful and serene master bedroom with drapery in a Robert Allen fabric, gets a lift with a zebra print chair and Moravian star light from Shades of Light.

Master ensuite features sconces from Restoration Hardware, marble benchtops and that gorgeous x-bench is from Wisteria.

Beautiful Ann Sacks tiles in the kids' bathroom.

I love trends and fashions in interiors as much as I do clothing, and I pine for and drool over the lastest looks and fads as much as the next person. Whether it be patterns, colours, fabrics, furnishings or looks. But at the end of the day, I just have to remember that as nice as it is to look at, I have to resist the transient nature of design and go with what I can live with and that for me is timeless, classic, liveable, comfortable, inviting, inspiring and welcoming - oh and kid friendly!

Hope you have a restful weekend.
