We designed and built our pool house the year before we started plans on our main house. A little backwards? Yes! While most would built their house first, we decided to start small and used the pool house as a "dress rehersal" to try out design ideas that we were considering for the main house, but on a smaller scale. In went wainscotting on walls and ceilings and riverstone on the shower floor, design elements that we liked so much, they were carried through to the main house. Of course, we were hoping that any mistakes we made wouldn't follow us to the main house too. Working on a smaller project first gave us the opportunity to add unique design elements--the cupola perched on the roof is one of my favorite follies- you might not even notice it at first but it lends such a classic touch to the structure. In this case, working backwards really worked for us.
