Title : Professional Tools - Rendering
Professional Tools - Rendering
Over the years as I've flicked through my interiors magazines I've always been fascinated by the rendering skills of interior designers. I never really understood what it was or the skill required to do it well, until I tried it myself. House Beautiful regularly features the "Instant Room" in its monthly issue, where celebrated designers are invited to create a room design featuring matching fabrics, wall coverings, paint colours etc. This always includes an illustration of the room, rendered, to show how it will look when complete. As a designer, it must be a wonderful and incomparable tool for conveying your dream and vision to the client, but it amazes me that this skill is still used given the advances in computer technology, when it seems almost archaic, despite its charm.
Here are some recent examples.....

When I studied Interior Decorating at Coco Republic last year, we were required to render a room, from a photo sourced from Belle magazine. Here's the original photo.
We then had to trace the photo to create a black and white outline drawing.
We then had to render the drawing to reflect the end result, to show the client exactly how the room would look when decorated. We were shown how to indicate all the various tones, textures, materials and colours of the fabrics, furnishings and materials with myriad techniques for creating different finishes. It was very challenging. There are plenty of fancy pencils, textas and other tools available specifically for this purpose, and it was marvellous fun doing this kind of grown-up colouring in.
Here's my amateurish first attempt.
I can see why, despite it being hugely labour-intensive, it is such a valued tool of the interior designer, and why they continue to utilise it despite all the technology available. When done properly, it is in its own right, a work of art and quite charming.
