Title : D & D Building, designer showrooms and helping the GFC!
D & D Building, designer showrooms and helping the GFC!
Set off for the famed Design and Decoration Building on E58th St. This is like Mecca for anyone interested in interior design, fabrics, wallpaper, lighting, rugs, furniture etc. You can't consider yourself a designer or decorator until you've been here and done the hard yards going through 14 floors of designer showrooms and wholesale/trade suppliers. It's overwhelming, exhausting, stressful and confusing but boy is it worth it! If you dont mind the snooty, jaded New Yorkers who barely look up to give you the time of day, then it's an amazing experience and a visual overload. I had to stop on floor 11 as I couldn't take anymore -attitude or choice! Got samples of the wallpapers I have been ogling and can now make some decisions.
Went back to Waterworks which had been closed before and got down on my knees and cried. Then spent an hour just looking at vanities, tiles, taps and towels, taking photos and sighing. I think the salesgirls thought I was a bit strange, especially when I told one she was so lucky to work there. She looked at me very quizzically as if I was a little nuts. Have found two divine bathrooms sconces I must have, so hoping Matt F. can help there! See FB photos.
Headed to the famed toy store FAO Schwartz opposite the Plaza Hotel, and found some wonderful pressies for the kids for their birthdays coming up. The selection there is staggering and such fun. I had a ball picking out fairy dresses and it made a nice change going for the glitziest, loudest, frilliest, most gareish pink and frou frou dress I could find. Not hard!
Dragged myself through impossibly stylish and grossly overpriced but ever so elegant department stores Barneys and Bergdorf Goodman. No intention of buying, but can say I went there. Headed back to hotel to drop off heavy load of bags and had great Japanese meal in funny little restaurant down some stairs in a side street. Full of locals so must be good.
Fell asleep on bed with sheer sleep deprivation and exhaustion and awoke in time for dinner with great old friends from New Jersey who came to the city to meet me. Lovely meal in restaurant opposite the Lincoln Centre on Broadway. Them a stroll around this iconic Arts building and home. Note to self return to huge Pottery Barn, Bed Bath and Beyond, Gap, Banana Republic, Zara and Gracious Home all nearby. There are sets of sheets and towels I absolutely must have!
Thought I was done for the night but got my second wind and time is running out. So at 9pm headed out down to Times Square. Warm and dry, a fun atmosphere and people milling around everywhere. Took a moment to absorb the atmosphere of one of the most iconic places and then went shopping. Where else in then world can you shop at 10.30pm for presents for your kids? The Disney store was teeming with people and I bought just about one of everything. Rapunzel, Cinderella, Jasmine, Snow White, Woody, Jessie, Cars, Tinkerbell, Captain America! you name it, I got it! So that's birthdays and Christmas done for my kids, for the next two years! Then headed to Sephora for some last minute cosmetic shopping. Again, chockablock full of people buying nail polish and lipstick at nearly midnight! Amazing! Bought my fair share.
Who needs sleep when you are in This city? It's now past midnight and I'm sitting back in the bar posting this and can't wait til the shops open in ten hours. Heading off to Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware tomorrow who have amazing sheets and bathroom stuff. Will be nearing my luggage quota soon.I reckon I have done my part to ease the pressure of the GFC on the US. Expect a call from Obama any minute by way of thanks.
Check out Facebook page for photo updates. There's a couple of albums and they are all a bit mixed up, so make sure you see everything.
Off ot trybto sleep. Thanks for the vino Gordon!
